MRCOG Exams

This is the first part of membership exams. It is expected that trainees will pass this by the end of ST2.

This is a computer based single best answer exam taken at Pearson Vue venues. It consist of two papers, each has 100 SBAs. It is normally held bi-anually in January or July every year. 

Candidates will first need to apply for eligibility prior to booking for the exam. They will also need to register for expression of interest prior to be given a seat for the exam. Important deadlines for these two processes can be found in the RCOG website. 

Trainees are normally advised to allocate three months to prepare for this exam.

Trainees need to pass this exam by the end of ST5. UK trainees planning to enter UK specialist register need to attempt this exam within 7 years of passing MRCOG part 1. Other trainees will need to attempt within 10 years. Maximum of 6 attempts are allowed. 

Similar to part 1, candidates will first need to apply for eligibility prior to booking for the exam. They will also need to register for expression of interest prior to be given a seat for the exam. Important deadlines for these two processes can be found in the RCOG website. 

This is combination of a computer based single best answer (SBA) and extended matching questions (EMQ) sat at Pearson Vue venues. This assess the trainees application of knowledge in clinical scenarios. 

This exam is split into two papers each 3 hours duration with an hour break in between that contain 50 SBA and 50 EMQ in each paper. These is no passing mark set but trainees are advised to allocate minimum of 6 months of preparation to score highly to pass this exam.

MRCOG Part 3

Trainees need to pass this exam by the end of ST5. This is an objective structured clinical examination that consists of 14 tasks in a circuit. It is taken face-to-face at the RCOG in London.

In contrast to previous two parts, trainees can apply for Assesment of Training (AOT) to confirm eligibility prior to passing Part 2 exam. This is crucial information for candidates who plan to sit for this exam soon after passing for Part 2 because the deadline is before the result for Part 2 is announced.
